Fr. Prof. Chukwuemenam Umezinwa
Vice-chancellor, Peter University
Achina / Onneh, Anambra State
Dear students, staff and esteemed visitors,
I welcome you to this ‘City on the Hill’, Peter University Achina/Onneh Anambra State, a citadel of learning and research, innovation and excellence. As we open our beautiful gates to you on this lush green landscape, I think of the unlimited potential lying silent inside each of you, our current and prospective students and what all of us can achieve for ourselves and our world if we work smart, together and with grace.
At Peter University, we are committed to redefining education by providing transformative experience that goes beyond the classroom or the regimented curricula that neither advance knowledge nor solve real human challenges. We are interested in training, nurturing and mentoring well-rounded human beings who are not only academically sound but also culturally aware, morally stable, socially responsible and globally competitive.
We believe that the vision of the founders and funders of the university has to be realized and surpassed when we build a vibrant community of scholars, researchers and professionals dedicated to pushing the boundaries of knowledge through a culture of excellence. This is in keeping with the motto of the university – Ut Omnes Excellant (That all May Excel).
To our new students, you are joining a noble family that values critical thinking, curiosity, creativity and collaboration. There are numerous opportunities waiting for you. Make responsible use of them by engaging in research, participating in extracurricular activities and building healthy and lasting relationships with your peers and mentors. You are here not simply to earn a degree. For that degree, you will need at least four other certifications in different skills to earn it but beyond all this, you are here to discover your purpose and prepare to contribute very meaningfully to society. In the words of Horace Mann, a great reformer of American education and politics: “be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity”.
To our older students, keep striving for excellence. You must answer the call of history by bearing on your shoulders the burden of pioneers with nobility and grace. Be good leaders. Sharpen your skills. Broaden your horizons. You shall be our witnesses and ambassadors. Always remember that.
To our dedicated staff, I offer my deepest gratitude for your unwavering commitment to the development and advancement of our students and institution. You are the unseen force that is felt everywhere. Despite the odds, you still give your best. I salute you all.
May we all be steadfast at our stations with focus on our values: innovation, service, integrity, diligence and excellence. May your time at Peter ‘the Rock’ University be fulfilling, inspiring and transformative. Once again, welcome to Peter University.
